Chapter Fourteen

“Daddy, wook at my pretty dress.” Evie says, happily showing off her dress twirling around. I smile, she looks beautiful in an ‘appropriate’ black dress with dark flowers across the flared skirt, shiny black flats and her hair is pulled back into a ponytail.

“You look beautiful baby. Grandma and grandpa won’t even recognise you, you’ve grown so much,” I whisper hoarsely, and scoop her into my arms.

“Daddy, look wiwy wet me wear Ewiza’s charm bracewet,” she says, thrusting her arm in my face and conking me on the nose.

“Wow, that’s pretty. You’ll have to be very careful with it. Grandma wants you to come and stay with her for a couple of days, would you like that?”

“Yes! I wove to, I miss grandma. Wiw mommy be at the party? I miss her too.” Her question knocks the wind out of me and I swallow painfully.

“No baby, mommy is in heaven now remember? This party is to celebrate her life.” I manage, it’s still so hard to tell my little girl that her mommy is gone and never coming back.

“Are you sure? Mommy visited me wast night and towd me she woves me.”

“She did love you baby, more than anything in this world and she will always be with you, in here.” I lay my hand over her heart, then pull her into my chest to hide the tears in my eyes. “Okay, go grab a few things for your sleepover and then we’ll get going.” She nods and skips off happily.

“I’ll just go, help Evie,” Niles mutters and rushes off leaving me with Lily.

“Thank you,” I say, when they’re out of sight.

“It was my pleasure. She’s still not warming to Amy and Bailey?”

“Nope, I’m not sure what else I can do, she refuses to let Amy anywhere near her and if Bailey so much as looks at me Evie throws a fit.”

“Maybe her time with Beverly will help?”

“I have no idea. Are the twins ever like this with Jackson when they’re upset?” I ask, moving into the living room.

“No, but he has been in their life since they were babies. Plus, Evie is going through a few things right now and she needs time to adjust.”

“I know and I’m trying to get her to talk to me but she won’t, the most she’s said about what’s going on is what you just heard. Has she said anything to you?”

“Not much, just that she’s seen her mom.”

“I’m not sure if this is something I should be worried about? If it carries on I think I’ll talk to a professional.”

“I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, I think it’s a part of her grieving process.”

“Maybe. How are things with you and the book?” I ask, I’m still a little freaked out that she wrote a book about one of the shittiest times of my life but I’m genuinely happy and excited for her.

“Well, it’s going really well it’s been edited and it’ll be out in print sometime in the next month,” she says, getting comfortable.
